'The Flying Stove' [90 x 90 x 110 cms] Alison King

This three-dimensional piece was based on my own Coalbrookdale stove which was manufactured a stone's throw away from the Museum of Iron. For this exhibition we were encouraged to consider possible contradictions and I thought it would be entertaining to see this apparently heavy iron stove fly up into the rafters of the cavernous venue. Suspended from wires the stove appeared to hover, if not actually fly, aided by a pair of feathery wings attached to the rear. Inside the coals lit up, emanating warmth and light.
