'Telling
stories' from A Making Sense of Paper |
|
Jan Miller as a textile artist explores the layers of memories of everyday domestic and working life. Her work traces the routine and repetition of workers and processes that are often overlooked. Handwritten work-records and book construction have influenced her recent research into the natural dye industry from ancient alchemy to nineteenth-century science.
Jan's preferred materials are old fabrics and paper that bring their own history to her work. Material is marked in three ways: repeated manipulation and folding changes the two-dimensional to three-dimensional, and incised marks are left behind; natural dyes make colour shifts and deepen the marks; handstitch accentuates detail and increases texture and depth.
Jan is a member of the Practical Study Group, 62 Group, Embroiderers' Guild, and Costume and Textile Association for Norfolk Museums. She has successfully completed an MA in Textile Culture at Norwich School of Art and Design. Jan has taught textiles for ten years at City College, Norwich, on Access, A-level and City and Guilds Embroidery Part 2 courses. She exhibits regularly and participates annually in the Open Studio scheme in Norfolk.
