I am a freelance lecturer and tutor specialising in design workshops with a focus on mixed media and stitch. I offer 2- or 3-day workshops and summer schools throughout the UK, working in association with the Embroiderers' Guild and a number of professional groups.

Since 1982 I have exhibited extensively in Scotland with 'edge', and more recently with The Practical Study Group at The Knitting and Stitching Show in London, Dublin and Harrogate, in 'Not What it Seams, First Thoughts'. This was followed by 'Not What it Seams, Further Thoughts', again with the PSG, at Bankfield Museum.

Earlier major exhibitions include 'Textiles for Interiors' at the Royal Institute of British Architects; 'Art of the Stitch' with The Embroiderers' Guild; 'Out of the Frame', a travelling exhibition organised by the Crafts Council; and a group exhibition at the Midlands Arts Centre Gallery, Birmingham.

I have undertaken a number of large-scale commissions for The Commission for Ancient and Historic Monuments, Scotland, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Rachel House, the first hospice for children in Scotland. I also have a number of pieces in public and private collections.

My work has recently featured in several books and publications including 'Stitch Magazine' and 'World of Embroidery' as well as 'Classic Stitches'.

Most of the imagery I have used is autobiographical in nature: I was brought up on the banks of the Tay in Fife, on the East coast of Scotland, and this is reflected in my fascination with both the local landscape and family history.

I like to use traditional techniques such as shadow work and to combine mixed media with hand and machine stitch. I use a method of layering to create depth, registering the images below with those above. This method of working stems from my early training in screen printing (at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee) where colour separation and the registration of one image with another is vitally important.

More recently I have gone back to the drawing board and rekindled my interest in mixed media with stitch.
